Behind our new crochet kits is a person with a big heart. Mette Kjelgaard is the initiator of Tröstemöss Sverige, a non-profit project that distributes thousands of crocheted comfort mice to children in hospitals. As a partner and experienced crocheter, Mette shares her inspiration and tips here for those who want to crochet our new Watoto Mini kit.

“Crocheting is my relaxation”

For Mette, crocheting is a way to both relax and do good. For several years, she has been crocheting comfort mice that are distributed to children in hospitals. The first model she crocheted from the DIY kit was Nina, one of our most popular Watoto Minis.

“I love her, so super cute and wonderful to hold in your hand.”

A little crocheted friend can make a big difference

A little comfort mouse is a great source of comfort for children in a tough situation.

“I have received stories about how much the comfort mouse has meant. Hospital staff say that it often helps to calm the child during examinations.”

That is exactly what we hope our Watoto Minis will also come to mean.

The Tröstemöss association has developed the pattern for the DIY kit and will also crochet and donate Watoto Minis to children at hospitals across the country.

A crochet pattern to love

We asked Mette for her opinion on the crochet pattern, and it got a thumbs up!

“I really like the layout with pastel colors and small pictures of the dolls on every page.”

It makes it easy to follow even if you are a beginner, or just want something simple and cozy to crochet at home.

Mette’s best tips for those who want to start crocheting

Are you new to the world of crochet? Then Mette has a tip:

“My best tip is not to rush, crochet tightly, and embroider the eyes before you stuff the head with batting.”

It is often the small details that make the whole thing magical.
