How can a workshop become part of a museum’s narrative while simultaneously giving children and visitors the opportunity to create and be creative themselves.
Ahead of the Easter holidays, Watoto Arts was commissioned to produce 400 small dolls for the Maritime Museum in Stockholm. The dolls were to be used in the museum's creative Easter holiday activity, where children could create their very own mini-mermaids.
The Maritime Museum's theme during the holiday was the world of mermaids. Visitors encountered stories, myths, and legends about mermaids through, among other things, family tours, storytime sessions, and creative activities. As part of the program, children could book a special workshop where a Watoto Arts doll became the starting point for their own mermaid character.
From doll to custom mermaid
In the workshop, children from the age of four were invited to participate together with an accompanying adult and create their own mini-mermaid doll.
Each workshop lasted approximately 45 minutes, which gave the children time to create, choose expressions, and transform the doll based on their own imagination.
A workshop created for the museum's theme
When we work with museums and cultural organizations, we start from:
- a current exhibition
- a holiday theme
- a story or book
- a historical figure
- a place or collection
- a subject that the organization wants visitors to explore
It is precisely this that makes our workshops unique! Our production and experience with creative workshops can be adapted to another organization's content and create an unforgettable activity that feels right at home there.
On the museum's own website, you can read more about Create your own mini-mermaid:
