Hur involverades du i processen?
Tack Watoto Arts

]]>This blog post will explore the importance of doll play as a form of play therapy in hospitals, focusing on the use of soft dolls.
Emotional support through representation
Soft dolls representing sick children play a critical role in providing emotional support. Children can often feel lonely and isolated in the hospital environment, surrounded by unfamiliar people and equipment. By giving them dolls that reflect their own experiences, children can feel less alone. These dolls become not only friends but also companions who 'share' the child's illness experience. It creates a sense of togetherness in an otherwise abnormal situation.
Preparation and processing of medical procedures
One of the most significant uses of puppetry in hospitals is the preparation and processing of medical procedures. Understanding and processing what is going to happen can be challenging for children. By using dolls and puppet theater, the healthcare staff can explain processes, interventions and treatments in a simple and empathetic way. The children can 'perform' the procedure on the dummy first, which helps them understand what will happen and reduces fear and anxiety.
Play therapy as a tool for expression
Children often express themselves through play, and dolls can serve as a medium for this expression. In a hospital setting, where children may struggle to verbalize their feelings, puppetry can offer an alternative avenue of communication. By observing how a child interacts with a doll, therapists and health care professionals can gain insights into the child's emotional state and possible concerns. This can be crucial in providing targeted psychological support and understanding the child's individual needs.
Strengthening coping mechanisms
Coping with illness and hospitalizations can be challenging for children. Doll play can play a vital role in strengthening coping mechanisms. By playing out different scenarios, the children can feel a sense of control over their situation, something that is often limited in a hospital environment. This sense of control and the ability to 'practice' situations before they occur can reduce stress and contribute to a more positive hospital experience.
Summary
The use of soft dolls in hospital play therapy offers a powerful method to prepare, support and help children through their hospital stays. These dolls are not just toys; they are therapeutic tools that can be used to facilitate communication, offer emotional support, and help children process and prepare for medical procedures. By recognizing and integrating the value of doll play into hospital care, we can make children's hospital experiences less frightening and more manageable, which in turn can contribute to faster recovery and better psychological well-being.

]]>Did you have a crush as a kid?
Did you know that snutis are also called transitional objects? They are important for the child's psychological development. After all, toddlers cannot reason themselves into comfort, but must have a concrete object whose purpose is to provide comfort and calm. This is also why many children feel a special attachment to their little one and that parents do everything to keep the little one from leaving.
The Snuttis often consists of a stuffed animal with kind facial features and a soft body that is huggable for the little ones.
Parenting is not only about satisfying physical needs, but also about promoting the child's psychological development. An interesting aspect of this is linked to the use of snuff boxes or snuff blankets. Here are 5 scientific proofs that using snuffle blankets promotes children's psychological development.
Choosing a snitch or snuttefelt that is made in Sweden from organic material means that you not only take care of your child's well-being, but also of the environment and the future. Organic materials are kind to sensitive skin and minimize exposure to chemicals. Locally produced alternatives reduce the environmental impact by reducing the transport distance and supporting local businesses.
Let's create a safe and sustainable future for our little ones by making conscious choices from the earliest moments of their lives.

Diversity, environmentally friendly and inclusive is so nice, it's something I want to talk to Sally about when she gets a little older. For the time being, one must try to show in action what applies
Today, individualism and one's own self have become so important. I miss humanism, generosity and solidarity. I want to pass that on to Sally.
"Sally is the one who makes me want to stick around for a while longer. I want her to understand that there are very old people too"
I had my sons at the age of 23 and 25, in 1965 and 1967. Back then there were a lot of toys to buy. Cars of course, scale models in metal, (tried with a doll each which never got any appreciation) but above all Duplo and Lego and books. We lived in a residential area with many children and there was a lot of outdoor play. We mothers took turns looking after everyone's children and when the weather was worse, they were allowed to play indoors in most homes. I was a "housewife" for 13 years and at that time the family could live on 1 salary, the best years of my life. Although it was also great fun to get out into working life again!
It feels like I got to live in the best age and now I get really happy when I meet a person who tries to strive against the bad.

But don't worry, today we share our 5 best tips to create a harmonious, smooth and safe schooling!
1. Visit and play in the preschool yard when the preschool is closed. This helps the child to get used to the new place, making the transition easier on the start day itself.
2. Tell the child about the preschool in a positive way. Play together "preschool" where your child can act as an educator and you as a preschooler feel free to incorporate dolls here. This allows the child to play out their feelings and questions about preschool.
3. A little on your gut, you know your child best. Take the time to talk to the staff, ask questions about routines, activities and anything else you wonder about.
4. Adapt the schooling to your child. Try implementing some of the preschool routines at home for recognition and a smoother transition. Stay with the child until he feels safe in the preschool.
5. Bring asoft doll to bedtime to create security.
Together with Marie Cham and Caroline Farberger, we had a deep and intimate conversation where personal experiences were shared and where concrete tips on how to contribute to a more inclusive society were shared.
Big thanks to the audience and everyone who contributed to the conversation, you guys are amazing!
"This kind of meeting is so important, we have to talk to each other, listen, ask curious questions, grow together"
"The risk is great for exclusion when the norm is not questioned. The important thing is to become aware of those who are not represented in the room and to work for inclusion by opening doors and inviting when the opportunity exists"
Marie Cham is chairman of the National Association of Afro-Swedish people , with extensive experience in anti-racist work with a focus on diversity, equality and inclusion. As an active member of the National Organization of Afro-Swedish people, she has also participated in the social debate around issues related to Afrophobia and inequality. The importance of inclusion and representation in children's play is about giving all children the opportunity to participate in play, regardless of their skin color or ability.
Caroline Farberger is a business leader who currently works as a partner and chairman of the board for the investment company Wellstreet. She has a long background in leading positions in the financial industry and currently has several board assignments for financial companies. Caroline has previously lived as a man and is very committed to increased diversity and inclusion in business and society at large.
]]>During this early phase of life, the child is still on his journey of discovery and developing his senses.
Dolls with soft materials and contrasting colors can attract attention and stimulate the eye.
The child can explore the doll by petting it, pulling it or simply using it as a security and huggable friend
During this period, the child begins to mimic and imitate the behaviors and interactions of adults.
Playing with dolls gives the child the opportunity to understand and imitate everyday situations such as cooking, dressing himself or taking care of a baby .
The child can also use the dolls to express their own feelings and process different situations.
At this age, the child's social and emotional abilities develop further.
Play with dolls becomes more interactive and often involves other children or adults.
Through role play and dramatization, the child can experiment with different roles and relationships, which helps to understand others' perspectives and practice cooperation.
Now the puppets become more imaginative and complex.
The child can create his own stories and adventures with his dolls and create a whole world around them.
The game can involve different themes such as superheroes, princesses or adventurers and helps to develop the child's language, storytelling skills and creative thinking.
At this age, the puppeteers can be more focused on creating their own scenarios.
The child can be more involved in creating and designing clothes or accessories for their dolls.
Play can also include more complex stories and role plays, helping the child to continue to develop their imagination and creativity.
Play with dolls an integral part of children's development over the years. Regardless of age, it provides the opportunity for creativity, imagination and learning. So let's encourage children to play with dolls and give them the opportunity to explore and create their own worlds.

]]>By having different types of representation in toys, for example different genders, ethnicities, body types and functional variations, inclusion and diversity are promoted. This helps children feel seen, represented and included. When children see themselves represented in the toys they play with, they have the opportunity to recognize themselves and strengthen their identity.
Children get the opportunity to learn about and understand people, cultures and experiences. By playing with inclusive toys, children can develop empathy, compassion and understanding of differences. This helps to reduce stereotypes and promotes tolerance and respect for other people.
When children see that there are toys that represent different qualities, interests or professions, they can be inspired and feel encouraged to follow their own dreams and interests. This can lead to increased self-confidence and belief in one's own ability to achieve one's goals regardless of what stereotypes or expectations society may have.
Tip! Inclusive dolls also provide an opportunity for adults to talk to children about diversity and inclusion. To help them in a simple way to develop empathy and understanding for other people's experiences and perspectives
Here you will find all our inclusive dolls, as usual you can choose whether you want your doll filled with Swedish wool or with recycled polyester.
]]>Wool from Swedish sheep is a popular natural material. Wool is durable, dirt-repellent, flame-resistant and has insulating properties that make it comfortable to play with in different climates. Wool is also biodegradable and recyclable.
Both recycled polyester wadding and wool from Swedish sheep have their advantages. Regardless of your preferences, you can now choose for yourself whether you want your Watoto doll filled with recycled polyester or with wool from Swedish sheep.

It has been a very interesting experience that has given me a lot of experience of what it is like to run a family business. It is a freer work environment where you can try different things. I have seen how collaborations are done between Watoto and other companies. In these collaborations, I have seen the entire process from start to finish in product development. I've had a lot of fun and learned a lot about what it takes to run a business. I have also learned about different types of programs in the embroidery machine and how to design faces for the dolls in those programs. It has also been very interesting to see how a family business handles efficiency in its production.
I love to knit and crochet.
I am interested in interior design.
I am surrounded by many in my family who are artistic and creative.
By playing with dolls of different skin colors, the children learn to accept and understand differences and to break social structures and norms. When they play with inclusive dolls, they can also see themselves or their friends represented in the play, which can boost the children's self-confidence and self-esteem.
When playing with inclusive dolls, you can also learn to respect and appreciate differences. In this way, the children can learn about different countries and cultures in a fun and interactive way.
Having access to dolls of different skin colors can also help children develop their empathy and social skills. By playing with dolls, they can learn to care for others, show care and compassion, and learn to cooperate and communicate with all children.
So there you have it, my friends! It's super-duper important for kids to play with dolls of different skin colors and cultural backgrounds. The dolls can help children develop a positive attitude towards differences, and learn to appreciate and respect other people. As a bonus, the dolls can also help children develop their social skills and show empathy. So if you have the chance to give a child access to dolls of different skin colors, you will find them here !

]]>Wool is naturally insulating. In addition to keeping warm, you can also use it to keep things cold. If you have a cold bottle on a hot summer day, you can put it in a wool mitten and it will stay cold longer. Wool also works well to insulate houses.
There are different breeds of sheep and thus different qualities of the wool. Some people feel that wool garments are knitted and it depends a lot on how long the wool fibers are that the garment is made of. In general, you can say that the longer the wool's fibers are, the less itchy it is. Then, of course, the type of wool plays a big role. Merino wool is a finer wool fiber and is therefore popular among underwear. Just make sure the wool is Muelsing free to ensure the animals are well.
Felting wool is a wonderful way to create different things. What happens during felting is that the small barbs of the wool fibers hook into each other. It is possible to felt both with water, soap and rubbing. It is the mechanical processing that makes it felt, not just that the wool ends up in hot water.
It is also possible to felt with a so-called Felting needle that has barbs on it and by poking the wool with the needle, it tangles up and with that technique you can form figures very freely.
In addition to felting with the wool, you can card and spin it into thread and knit, crochet and weave it.
The industry is trying to find ways to copy the fine properties of wool by creating new fibers. Acrylic is an example of a fiber that is common in the fashion industry for knitted sweaters. However, Acrylic and the other synthetic materials are made from oil, which requires more of the earth's resources. No single synthetic material has all the fine qualities that wool has.
So I would like to urge you to look at the patch on the inside of the garment, often in the left seam of sweaters, and see what material the garment is made of.
A wool garment lasts a long time and if it gets a hole, it can be repaired to extend the life of the garment.
My favorite items with wool are wool underwear, home-knitted thick socks, wool slippers, wool soles for shoes, mittens, hats and knitted sweaters.
I'd rather choose two or three layers of wool than a thick bulky winter jacket when it's a maximum of -10 degrees outside.
There are many wool blankets in my home. On a cold winter's evening, it's wonderful to lie down on a wool mattress instead of crawling between cold sheets. A woolen blanket under the cover is also fantastically warm.
Wool is such a beautiful material, so I think wool products fit nicely at home. A felt seat trap, woolen bowls, figures made of wool or why not a lantern made of wool that you can light tealights in. At Easter it is nice to hang small felted eggs in the Easter basket and at Christmas you can create lots of beautiful Christmas decorations for the tree.
During my wonderful internship weeks at Watoto Arts, I have witnessed fulfilled promises and constant work towards sustainable development.
The work here has varied from sewing the dolls, to designing clothes and discussions about product development. I have been able to participate and contribute to the business and it has been a great opportunity for a young intern like me.
]]>Many find that trying to balance important values with the company can be difficult, especially when you have several set goals to fulfill. Through time and with the development of the company, it is easy for these values to disappear from work and thoughts.
During my wonderful internship weeks at Watoto Arts, I have witnessed fulfilled promises and constant work towards sustainable development.
From a small doll atelier located in Solna, Fatma and Hamid have managed to create a business where every product radiates the joy of these values. Namely inclusive play and environmental friendliness. As an intern, I (Sandra) have been able to participate and contribute to these important developments that shape the society around us. Above all, it is a rare opportunity for a young intern like me, to be part of the business and come up with ideas.
The work here has varied from sewing the dolls, to designing clothes and discussions about further development. The entire doll sewing process is filled with environmentally friendly processes. Everything from the choice of fabric and fabric cutting to the stuffing of the doll and the accessories, are carefully carried out. Little fabric waste and climate-smart materials are an everyday sight at Watoto Arts, which I, as a sewing student, am very happy to see. The business that I have witnessed has constantly developed in a sustainable way and is always looking for new opportunities to use more environmentally friendly materials. It is not often that you come across businesses that apply their entire production to convey their values.
With the doll, the children can feel like the main character in their play, while at the same time contributing to a smaller climate impact. After all, the children are the future, which Watoto Arts values very much. Inclusive play contributes to the children's learning about empathy for their fellow human beings who have varying appearances than themselves. This, in my opinion, builds a stable foundation for future respectful community interactions. With a loving community building and environmentally friendly production, we can create a sustainable future together.
Not all children in the world have this opportunity to play with dolls. Therefore, I look forward to future collaborations that will strengthen children's rights and reduce climate impact.
All children should have the right to play with dolls, not the obligation to create them.
]]>Many thanks to Caroline Farberger who extended her hand and invited us to the gala. Caroline Farberger tells us that she wants to support underrepresented founders and that it will always be close to her heart simply because inclusion is important. We are so happy to have gotten to know Caroline and to see how she actively works to create a more inclusive society.
Here is an excerpt from the article which also reveals our newest collection which is coming soon!
“The production chain is short-lived and transparent. Waste fabric is used for accessories and soon the dolls will be filled with batting from Swedish sheep, material that is normally discarded"

"You can buy a mass-produced doll, but you can also think: what does this mass-produced doll lead to? That it is so cheap, who has to pay the cost of it? Try to look past the fact that it is cheap and easily available. I want benefit my child, but do I want to do a little more? Is there something designed and manufactured in Sweden that contributes more? When I invest in this doll, it's not just the doll but so much more around it" - Fatma Guettou , founder of Watoto Arts, https://watotoarts.com/
This episode is about how a frustration in the toy store turned into an entire business. A few years ago, Fatma wanted to buy a doll for her child and was struck by the fact that the range did not at all reflect society at large. But instead of just feeling sad that so little had happened since she herself was a child playing with blonde Barbie dolls, she took matters into her own hands. Today, she runs Watoto Arts together with her husband, a company that makes Swedish-made dolls with the aim of challenging norms and creating conditions for inclusive play.
We also talk about an American doll test that is downright heartbreaking and about the importance of thinking of the whole society as a "doll box". Also: smart tactics to help each other so that more people can be seen and heard. And then we dive into this thing of running our own business, daring to test ourselves and always wanting to learn more. And how does Watoto Arts think in the choice of textile materials and production? Is it even possible to be credible in matters of diversity if you don't have a firm grasp of the entire production?

]]>Play is an important part of a child's development and there are many different toys that can promote learning and creativity. A toy that has sometimes been reserved for girls is the doll. In this blog entry we will look at five reasons why it is important for boys to play with dolls.
Playing with dolls gives boys the opportunity to explore and develop their social and emotional skills. By caring for dolls, boys learn to be empathetic and caring. They get the opportunity to practice communicating, sharing and collaborating. These are important skills that will be useful in life.
Playing with dolls stimulates the imagination and creativity of boys. By creating their own stories and scenarios with the dolls, they get an outlet for their imagination and can explore different roles and situations. This helps develop problem solving skills.
By encouraging boys to play with dolls, we can break gender stereotypes and promote gender equality. Playing with dolls helps show boys that caring and responsibility are important qualities that everyone can have. It creates an understanding that gender roles are not limiting and that everyone has the right to choose their own interests and games.
By playing with dolls that represent different cultures and lifestyles, boys have the opportunity to learn about differences and develop an openness to different perspectives. This can help reduce prejudice and promote tolerance and respect for diversity in society.
Playing with dolls gives boys an opportunity to learn about caring roles at an early stage. By caring for dolls, they gain an understanding of being part of a responsible and loving team. It gives them the opportunity to develop skills such as feeding, dressing and comforting their dolls. These experiences can be valuable as they grow up to take on caring roles in their lives.
Playing with dolls is an enriching and important activity for boys. Through playing with dolls, they develop empathy and social skills, promote imaginative play and creativity, break stereotypes and promote gender equality, increase understanding and respect for different perspectives and prepare for future caring roles. It is important that we encourage and support boys to explore different games and interests without being limited by gender stereotypes. By giving them the opportunity to play with dolls, we give them a broader view of the world and promote their personal and social development.

We have therefore chosen three concrete measures to minimize our climate impact and create a positive change in society:
1. To have a Swedish production
2. To offer employment for foreign-born women
3. Using leftover fabrics for accessories and creative activities for children
In a small way, the dolls make a difference to the child, but in a big way, they make a difference to society.
